There are only a few more hours to go until Gold Line trains begin making their highly anticipated trips to and from Azusa with actual passengers on them!

      By Marc Corti

The opening of the extension will give residents and visitors alike an additional option to traverse the Foothill Communities rather than utilizing the often congested 210 Freeway and the area’s main arterials. And like other rail openings in the past, Metro – along with its partner cities and other stakeholders of the project – will be hosting opening day parties, slated to take place at 5 of the 6 new Gold Line stations.

Here is what to expect on Saturday, March 5: (Android and IOS friendly).

Nice piece. Thanks for all the photos and info.

Just an enquiry… What is the future timeline for the next construction phase? Is Ontario Airport still the ultimate end of the line?

        • Marc says:

That’s a question many of us have as well! The Foothill Construction Authority (who has built the current extension) has completed and approved the required Environmental Review and is doing some preliminary design and engineering studies for the next phase to Montclair. (http://www.foothillgoldline.org/construction_phases/glendora_to_montclair/)

However, unfortunately the next segment (Azusa to Montclair) has not yet been funded and without that the Foothill Construction Authority cannot continue to build out the line. Metro is hoping to help the next extension and many other needed transit (roadway, bus and rail) projects by asking voters in November for a sales tax increase similar to Measure R, which was approved by voters in 2008. We are now starting to see the benefits of Measure R as it funded the Gold Line Extension to Azusa, the Expo Line Santa Monica Extension, the Regional Connector Project and the Purple Line Extension to UCLA, as well as, many other road and bus service improvements in the works.

Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti (who is also a Metro Board Member) has expressed his desire to see the Gold Line completed to Montclair. However, that looks most likely only to happen (there may be others ways to finance the project) if the new ballot measure in November supporting transportation projects passes (needs a 2/3’s majority).

Connecting the Gold Line to Ontario airport, which would be LA’s only direct rail link to any of our airports, is dependent upon San Bernardino County’s desire to see that done. Metro is a Los Angeles County organization.

Wish I still lived in Arcadia or Monrovia so I could experience the new rail system
