Few days to graduation, and PCC still has no commencement speaker.
The school rescinded commencement speech invitation to Oscar-winning screenwriter Dustin Lance Black, announced Pasadena’s director of public health, Dr. Eric Walsh, as a replacement then he pulled out due to an “unforeseen scheduling conflict” -which in reality was a controversy over his views on gays and evolution (he has since been placed on paid leave by the city Manager).
Then, the Board of Trustees re-invited Dustin Lane Black back. Still no word of his acceptance yet.
So, few days to the event and graduating students are embarrassed and may end up without a speaker.
How did they manage to do that? Better yet, what lessons will students get from all of this?
Politics and sheer dumbness have no place in education.
Maybe the real issue lies somewhere else. What if it is a cry for help from the Board of Trustees!
Let’s have an “intervention” for PCC’s Board of Trustees, shall we?
